TECHNICAL WIKI
Master vs Slave mainly decides how you can use files. A Master usually works with directly usable files. A Slave uses a protected flow and works with the Master it is linked to. Owning a Master does not mean you have the skills to develop maps.
01
A Master tool is used to communicate with ECUs and to obtain files that are usually usable without going through decryption by a third-party Master. On its own, it cannot produce a Stage 1, a Stage 2 or a map adaptation.
Many garages work with a Master and still send all their files to a File Service. Developing these files yourself requires in-depth engine management knowledge, a validation method and usually years of experience. It is work that calls on the skills of an engine development engineer, not a function provided by buying a Master tool.
02
With a Master tool, the calibration file is usually available in a format usable for editing software or for sending to a File Service that accepts it. You can send the file to a compatible File Service. In-house development is only possible if you have the skills and validation means — which buying a Master does not provide by itself.
A Master does not write a map for you: it communicates with the ECU and manages files. Creating a calibration still requires the appropriate skills and software.
A Master is not automatically compatible with more ECUs than the Slave version of the same hardware. Coverage depends on brand, licences, protocols, and updates.
03
A Slave tool is linked to a specific Master in the manufacturer’s ecosystem. Files for modification are usually protected or encrypted. The workshop using the Slave cannot simply open those files in an editor and send them to any tuner: it works with the Master the tool is linked to.
The associated Master accesses file content, performs or arranges modification, then provides the file in the format expected by the Slave. The exact procedure depends on the manufacturer: software, portal, file exchange, or connected service.
A Slave suits a workshop that wants to focus on diagnosis and read/write work while leaving calibration to the associated Master — for example within the ECUTuneFiles Slave network.

Simplified Master and Slave flow diagrams. A Slave remains linked to its associated Master.
The garage reads the ECU with its AutoTuner Master.
It obtains an unencrypted file, depending on the protocol used.
It can have this file modified by a compatible supplier or work on calibration itself.
It then writes the adapted file with the intended tool and procedure.
The garage reads the ECU with its AutoTuner Slave.
The file intended for processing is encrypted and linked to the associated Master.
The associated Master decrypts or processes the file in the intended environment, then prepares the modified file for the Slave.
The garage receives a file usable by its Slave tool and proceeds with writing.
Important consequence: a Slave only works with the Master it is linked to. ECUTuneFiles offers AutoTuner Slave tools to grow its own Slave client network; tools supplied under our offer are meant to be linked to the ECUTuneFiles Master. We cannot directly process encrypted files from a Slave linked to another Master.
05
| Criterion | Master | Slave |
|---|---|---|
| Files intended for modification | Generally usable without encryption tied to a third-party Master | Generally protected and linked to the associated Master |
| Choice of file supplier | More freedom, subject to file compatibility | Depends on the Master and associated ecosystem |
| In-house modification | Possible with required software and skills | Not directly on encrypted Slave files |
| Initial investment | Generally higher | Generally lower |
| Commercial dependency | Lower for file processing | Higher on the associated Master |
| ECU/TCU coverage | Depends on configuration and protocols | Also depends on configuration and protocols |
| Typical profile | Workshop wanting to choose suppliers or develop its calibrations | Workshop working with an identified calibration partner |
06
AutoTuner: according to the manufacturer, Master files are generally unencrypted and Slave files are encrypted and tied to a specific Master. Linking, transfer or upgrade conditions to a Master licence are defined by AutoTuner — check its official documentation.
Alientech KESS3: according to the manufacturer, Master and Slave offers use different processing paths. In the Slave flow, files go to the associated Master. Always check conditions and licences on the Alientech site.
Magicmotorsport Flex: according to the manufacturer and activated licence, Master allows usable files while Slave is linked to a Master and uses encrypted files. Exact terms are in Magicmotorsport documentation.
These examples share a common principle. Procedures, licences and transfer terms are not interchangeable across brands: when in doubt, refer to the manufacturer.
07
The professional carries out diagnostics, reading, writing and checks on the vehicle. To modify the protected file, they go through the Master associated with their tool. They must know the programming procedures and the limits of their equipment.
The professional carries out the same operations on the vehicle, but generally has more freedom to send files to compatible providers. They do not necessarily develop the maps themselves.
Beyond vehicle work, the team must analyse ECU strategies, map interactions and validate changes. Buying a Master or an editing licence is not enough — see “A Master does not develop files for you”.
08
First choose the vehicles you want to handle, then verify the tool's real coverage. Then ask a simple question: do you want to choose your file supplier freely, or work long term with an associated Master?
A Slave suits when you know your calibration partner and accept that dependency. A Master suits when you want more autonomy on files or to work with several providers. Hardware cost should not be the only criterion: licences, linking conditions, and support also matter.
Before buying a Slave, check which Master it will be linked to, how files are processed and Master-change conditions. A file encrypted for one Master is not usable by another provider.
If you are considering an AutoTuner Slave with ECUTuneFiles: our offer aims to grow our own Slave client network. Tools offered under this framework are meant to be linked to the ECUTuneFiles Master — not a competitor’s Master. Confirm linking conditions with us before any purchase.
